Abstract

Various studies show that when learners are able to get instruction in their mother tongue, they are able to understand technical information easier. Learners that are able to perform better at school are also able to eventually enter the workforce as educated professionals. In a country like South Africa, most learners cannot afford mathematics tutoring. Having access to tutoring on a platform like WhatsApp provides disadvantaged learners with the same opportunities as their more privileged counterparts. This paper investigates the development of a mathematics tutoring bot, Prof Pi, that is able to provide tutoring in a number of languages used in Africa besides English including Afrikaans, Zulu, Kiswahili, and Arabic.
